Eritrean Community in London Opens a Book of Condolences for Victims of Lampadusa

(London 11-10-13) Eritreans living in London and the surround opened a book of condolences and are holding a three day long community event to commemorate the victims of Lampadusa and in solidarity with their friends and families.

The event that was held outside the Eritrean embassy in London,  was opened in the presence of community elders and religious leaders was attended by Eritreans from all walks of life who braved adverse weather to attend.

Speaking at the even Abba Shinoda of the Eritrean Orthodox Church stated: ‘even at this dark hour and despite the fact that it still looks unbearable God would provide leadership and guidance to Eritreans’

Also present at the event were representatives of various civic and political organisations.

The book of condolence will remain open outside the embassy for three days and the vigil will continue with different prayers and messages of support from elders and religious leaders throughout the weekend.

Organisers of the event stated that they were disappointed to see the Eritrean flag flying on full mast despite the fact that hundreds of Eritreans perished only a week earlier: ‘this is a confirmations, if any was needed, that the regime in Eritrea cares nothing about Eritreans and any words offered in regards to this incidence are but empty gestures to accompany their crocodile tears’

Despite claims of agreements to repatriate the remains of the victims to their homeland, by Eritrean authorities situation on the ground in Lampedusa is still unclear ans specific arrangements are yet to be announced.
