Eritrean Film Evening

South Bank University

London

Freedom Friday in hosting a film event on Friday 23rd of May 2014. The evening will feature two films about the plight of Eritreans and particularly Eritrean refugees (unfortunately the second film is only available in Tigrigna).

Sound of Torture is a documentary that follows Meron Estefanos, an Eritrean journalist who runs an online radio program, publishing stories of the Sinai torture camps.

The film relates the experiences of thousands of Eritrean refugees flee the military dictator-ruled country in an attempt to get to Israel, crossing the Sinai desert. There, many are kidnapped by Bedouins and taken to one of the hidden camps where they are tortured for ransoms amounting to tens of thousands of dollars.

The film intimately follows Meron as she tries to investigate and report on the situation for her radio Erena show.

Siuwe Tezaribu (voices of the martyred) is an Eritrean musical that poignantly depicts the reaction of two parents, who lost their children during the war of independence and the current refugee crisis.

It is set in the days after October 2013 when 366 Eritreans lost their lives in a migrant boat accident off the cost of Lampedusa in Italy.

The film is written and co-produced with Eritrean artists who are themselves in Exile in Ethiopia.
