Activist then and now

A human rights activist back home and still now in Canada, it’s not possible for Hagos to leave the past behind. Quoting author William Faulkner, Hagos recites, “We may be through with the past but the past is not through with us.”

“That persecution, sorrow, suffering, you cannot call it the past. Unless men of commitment and dedication advocate for better, things will be worse,” he says.

All smiles - Zersenay Tadese smashing the World Record in the Half Marathon in Lisbon (Marcelino Almeida)

Scorching 58:23 World Half Marathon record by Tadese in Lisbon!

Lisbon, Portugal – Zersenay Tadese of Eritrea smashed the World record in the Half Marathon today, clocking 58:23* at the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon.

Tadese, the winner of four successive World Road Running and World Half Marathon titles, eclipsed the mark of 58:33 set by Kenyan Samuel Wanjiru in 2007.

Following the uncooperative weather the day before this IAAF Gold Label Road Race, nobody expected great things from the race today, but the Gods protecting this event came through. After a little bit of fog appeared on Lisbon’s famous 25 Abril Bridge, the sun was smiling through the clouds throughout the race.

So, that was the perfect signal everybody wanted as the race commenced. With the start at sea level (without crossing the bridge) the elite field ran against the clock as the organisers predicted.

By the 10th kilometre (27:53), the race was practically defined. By then, Tadese was running alone against the clock - the rabbits lasted for only nine kilometers – and produced the race of life. So far, that is!

A dream of freedom

Tedros’ dream began with founding a school newspaper.  Nothing out of the ordinary about that, you might say, but in Eritrea it just seemed bizarre!  Confounding his critics, Tedros and his high school colleagues started the monthly publication from nothing and became role models for other students. Tedros was on the path he dreamed of.

In May 2000, he joined the largest independent newspaper in Eritrea and met many of the courageous journalists who had inspired him as a child.  Not only that, but he relished and looked forward to the freedom that the 30 years’ war of independence with Ethiopia was all about.

“It was that time that I had been dreaming of, when I felt I had begun to enjoy my freedom, and I was thrilled. But, sadly, it was only the beginning of the end.”

Berhan helps bridge gaps

Mr Jaber, who works with a group called Eritrean Community in Australia, said the feeling in the Flemington community was miles away from where it was when he arrived in 2000.

Events like the Eid Festival and forming the North Lions Soccer Club had done amazing great things to not just link the wider community to the African community in Flemington, but to build bridges between African residents from different nations.

"For Aussies maybe we are all the same in a way as we are all black, but events like this have really bridged gaps within our own community," Mr Jaber said.

"With the soccer club we found out a lot of disadvantaged kids from minority groups had no chance to do any recreation.

"In the team now we have more than seven nationalities represented."

The award was formally conferred to Aaron Berhane by Prime Minister of Canada Mr. Stephen Harper during the gala dinner and award ceremony held on Nov. 21, 2009 at Seneca College, in Markham, Ontario. The event was attended by Minister of Immigration and Multicultural Jason Kenny and various government ministers, president, members of the Board of Senators, and faculty of Seneca College, and about 170 participants.

Meb Keflezighi becomes first American man to win New York City Marathon since 1982

As he approached the finish line, Keflezighi pointed to the letters U.S.A. on his chest and the crowd, already cheering, roared.

"The USA gave me all the opportunities there is in education, sports and lifestyle," he said. "To be able to represent the USA is a big thing for me."

Keflezighi, 34, who scored a silver at the 2004 Olympics, was born in Eritrea in Africa but he fled war and became a U.S. citizen in 1998.

His triumph was one of persistance after hardships two years ago that would have sidelined a lesser man: During New York's 2007 Olympic Men's Marathon Trials, he came in eight after suffering calf cramps and a fracture his right hip during the race.

Eritrean-Ethiopian Frienship Forum

Ethiopian & Eritrean Friendship Forum (EEFF) is holding its fourth annual conference on March 24th, 2012. Building on last year’s success, this year’s theme is "Healing Past Wounds -- Building Our Future Together", a critical idea to focus on in this increasingly competitive global economy.

We are sending this announcement to the wider Ethiopian and Eritrean community for two reasons:
- to invite as many people as possible to attend the conference. Be part of the solution!
- to invite thought leaders to share their views as panelists.

The son of a Priest thinks that God is his Uncle.

The demonstration called by Mr.  Kyriakakos et.al is not an isolated incident.  Even though on the surface it appears that it was in reaction to the WFP articles, but none the less it is not.  It was part and parcel of the series of demonstrations and seminars that suddenly erupted in the month of December 2011 called “Hizbawi Mekete” (National Rebuff) to object the sanctions on Eritrea that was being debated at the UNSC and show to the international community that the Eritrean government enjoys the full support of its people.  The instruction to demonstrate and hold public meetings and seminars was issued by the office of Mr. Yemane Gebreab, political advisor to the President of Eritrea and in charge of the “Hizbawi Mekete”.

Melbourne Rally 2012: For How Long Can You Remain Silent in the Face of Oppression?

Melbourne Rally 2012: For How Long Can You Remain Silent in the Face of Oppression?

As in previous years, we call on the Diaspora communities living in the free world that have chosen to be silent in the face of oppression and the ever growing injustice committed against the Eritrean people to fight for the people's rights. We remind you that you are morally obliged and duty bound to speak for the Eritrean people and to stand-up against injustice. We remind you the freedom that you enjoy are the outcomes of sacrifices paid by people who believed in liberty, freedom, justice and democracy. So, why don’t you demand for the Eritrean people the same civil rights that you are relishing? We encourage you to be part of the struggle for democratic change?
